Art and science come together to express Texas like never before, the result of hundreds of hours of expert dexterity in computer design, woodworking, and machining.

Introducing Topo 1845, an original art piece exclusively by No. 4 St. James, made in collaboration with designer and machinist, Mike Menta.

The boundaries of Texas as we know them today took shape in 1845, hence the name for these beautiful works of art.

Measuring approximately 20" wide and almost 2" thick, Topo 1845 depicts a substantially accurate topographical profile of Texas, based on real U.S. Geological Survey data. The vertical axis is slightly exaggerated, for added contrast and character.

We began this piece by first creating a custom, digital 3D model of Texas, and then scaling, resizing, and refining it. Mike then translated the model into a computerized machining program that established finishing paths for fabrication on a CNC (computer numeric controlled), large bed table router. Each piece takes more than 5 hours to carve, each line carved one at a time by the router bit.

Once carved, each piece is cleaned and lightly spot sanded by hand. It's then treated with a natural finishing oil and light resin mix, dried, and hand-buffed to a natural matte finish. After curing for several days, the art is complete. Altogether, more than 10 hours of work are put into the preparation, fabrication, and finishing of each piece.

Mike personally selects only the finest American walnut boards as the canvas, each joined together to match their natural color and grain patterns. No two pieces are exactly alike.

Your Topo 1845 comes with quality mounting hardware for easy display.

While some pieces are periodically available in-stock, you may need to allow up to 3 weeks for fabrication during busy seasons. You can send us a note at hello@fourstjames.com for current completion estimates.

Once ready, your Topo 1845 Wall Art in American Walnut ships to you directly from Austin, Texas.
